Keto vs. The Boards

Updates

Upon entering the writer's room three very important components come into view. First: our comic book library. The tall built-in shelving along the far wall of the room contains rows and rows of Batman, Daredevil, Superman, Doc Savage, Shadow, Spirit, X-Men, and Captain America; trades lined cover-to-cover, issues propped facing forward. Second: our conference table. This is where we sit for hours on end hashing out stories and pitching ideas. Third, and most important, are the boards.

Before there can be a shoot, there must be a script. Before there can be a script, there must be a story. How do you go from several storytellers to one story?

Before there can be a story, there's "What if...?" In the writer's room, those are the two words that begin everything.

It was over a month since I got the phone call from my agent that changed everything. From that moment on I was alight with excitement, apprehension, and curiosity. What was the writer's room going to be like? Who else was going to be in it? What, exactly, would we be doing in there?

Production Art Slideshow

The early stages of development on a brand new show like The Cape provide a veritable creative playground for all involved.  The opportunity to create and populate an entirely new world is both exciting and downright fun.  One critical step in that process is visually translating the creator's conception of the characters into what is known as "Concept Art."  An artist provides his or her rendition of various characters, shaping the drawings to match the writer's vision as closely as possible.  This Concept Art then allows for people such as costume and set designers to hair and makeup artists, among others, to get on the same page with regard to the look and feel of the characters.  Check out this cool gallery of some of the early explorations of characters like The Cape, Orwell and others.  And check back again soon, as there's more to come!

Keto vs. The Climb: Adventures from The Cape Writers Room

"Keto vs. The Climb" chronicles the trials and observations of Keto Shimizu, Staff Writer on "The Cape." Hailing from the boonies of Vermont and a graduate of Emerson College, Keto rolled into Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer/director. After a few years of juggling post-production day jobs with a writing regimen, Keto was selected to be one of 8 writers in NBC/Universal's "Writers on the Verge" program. A novice in the world of network television, Keto approaches the writers room a sponge, ready to soak up the experience. The following blog is an attempt to wring out that sponge from time to time, to take note of the unique and enlightening moments that comprise the day-to-day of a writer's room.
